Nonwoven Fabric Price Update: September 2026 — What Wet Wipes Producers Are Paying Now

China’s SS/SSS spunbond nonwoven was quoted around 12,000–12,200 yuan/ton in the first week of September 2026, roughly 200–500 yuan/ton above August. Read that as a headline and it sounds like a cost problem. For most wet wipes producers, it is not the cost problem that will hurt them this quarter.

Here is the distinction that matters. Substrate is the largest single line in your bill of materials — that part is true. But it is also the line your supplier quote was priced against, months before you placed the order. A move of a few hundred yuan per ton lands on a machine that has already been quoted. The damage happens at the next quote, or the one after that, not inside the current contract.

What actually moved in early September

Two different fabrics are traded in China, and they are priced on separate curves.

Spunlace — the fabric most wet wipes lines actually run — is the more expensive of the two. On 7 September 2026, a Shandong Weifang producer quoted direct-laid polyester/viscose 50/50 60G spunlace at 14,800 yuan/ton, and pure polyester 45G at 11,100 yuan/ton, ex-works and self-pickup. Full-viscose semi-cross-laid spunlace in the 70G–120G range was quoted stable at 18,800–19,000 yuan/ton, tax and freight included, with volume-based negotiation.

Then there is PP spunbond, used for hygiene products, packaging and medical disposables. Producer reference prices for SS/SSS grades clustered at 12,000–12,200 yuan/ton between 1 and 8 September, with the Henan market at 11,900–12,100 and one Hunan producer quoting SSS at 12,500.

Both numbers sit above where August closed. Neither is a spike.

Why the rise is moderate rather than sharp

September is the traditional peak season in this market — the “golden nine, silver ten” ordering window. Three demand streams stack on top of each other: agricultural autumn-plowing cold-proof fabric, engineering geotextiles, and year-end sanitary materials. The Christmas and year-end export peak then arrives in November and December.

That demand is meeting supply that has not run away. Industry operating rates were cited at roughly 38–40%, and new capacity was being absorbed without severe oversupply. Spot inventories were described as healthy. Cost support came from slightly higher polypropylene feedstock prices since August.

Now the turn. The same conditions that support the price also cap it. If downstream demand comes in weaker than expected, or new capacity lands in a concentrated block, the uptrend ends early. Analysts tracking this market have flagged that price transmission along the value chain is often lagged and incomplete — which means a rise at the fabric mill does not automatically arrive as a rise at your packaging line.

The conversion is smaller than the headline

This is where a buyer’s instinct and a buyer’s arithmetic diverge. A 200–500 yuan/ton move sounds like a serious input cost event. Converted down to a single pack of wipes, it is a fraction of a cent.

The wide, stable cost lies elsewhere. Sheet count, sheet size, fold type, solution loading, and the pack format itself move your per-pack cost by orders of magnitude more than a few hundred yuan on the substrate. A line that over-specifies gsm “for safety” spends far more every month than a line that absorbs this month’s spunlace increase.

Two producers running the same 80 packs-per-minute line can land months apart on substrate cost, and neither of them is being cheated. They specified differently, and the specification is what compounds.

Where the real exposure sits

The exposure is in the quotation you are about to sign, not the one you already signed.

If you are comparing suppliers right now, ask each one to quote substrate separately and to state the validity window in writing. A supplier quoting a fixed wet wipes production line price across a 90-day window is either carrying the risk themselves or has priced the risk in. Neither is wrong. You just need to know which one you are looking at.

If you are already running, this is a good week to request updated fabric quotes from two or three mills — not to switch, but to find out where your current contract sits against the market. Buyers who do this quarterly rarely get surprised.

A practical checklist before your next quote

  • Ask for the substrate line item separately, with the fabric type named (spunlace or spunbond, and the blend).
  • Ask for the gsm and the roll width you will actually run, not a range.
  • Ask how long the quoted fabric price holds, and what happens if it moves.
  • Compare yuan-denominated and dollar-denominated quotes against the same exchange-rate assumption.
  • Re-price every quarter, not every year.

Questions buyers ask us

Is nonwoven fabric the biggest cost in wet wipes production?
It is usually the single largest material line, but not the largest total cost once you include the machine, the solution, the packaging film, labour and freight. Treating it as the only lever is a common mistake.

Should I stockpile fabric now?
Only if you have dry, clean, pest-controlled storage and a production schedule that will consume it. Nonwoven is bulky and absorbs moisture. Stockpiling to beat a 300 yuan/ton rise, then losing the bottom layer of a pallet to damp, is a net loss.

Will prices keep rising through the end of 2026?
The market expectation is a moderate uptrend through September, then a high-consolidation phase in the fourth quarter with the price centre above the first half. That is an expectation, not a commitment. Crude oil and PP feedstock moves, plus Middle East geopolitical risk, cut both ways.

Does the yuan matter here?
Yes, if you are paying in dollars. The yuan has been firm — USD/CNY stood at 6.7082 on 11 September 2026 (ECB reference rate), little changed on the week — and a strong yuan compresses the supplier’s margin on a dollar-denominated contract. Expect less room to negotiate on price, and more willingness to negotiate on terms.

If you are pricing a wet wipes line or comparing fabric quotes and want a second pair of eyes on the numbers before you commit, that is the kind of thing we do. Send us the quote and we will tell you what we see.
